In Logan County, District 1, our focus is primarily concerned with making sure our county road maintenance crews are using the proper tools and techniques to produce the desired results, and so today we utilize industry standard deep patch and asphalt road repair.
As you may be aware, there are many areas in southwest Logan County, Oklahoma, where our asphalt roadways are beginning to structurally fail due to years of abuse by heavy gross weight vehicles and neglected periodic maintenance.
Our road superintendent and asphalt crew understands that in order to properly repair these areas we must dig out and replace the structurally deficient mud and clay soil failing and “pushing out” under the current loads with new dry road aggregate. Once replaced, the new road base aggregate is approximately 18″ deep and is set and compacted in layers with an 84” vibratory roller to re-establish a solid and strong road base. The deep patch area is then topped with a 3” extra stiff HMA overlay. This process is continued until all the failed, cracked, and bad spots are patched in this manner. Once all deep patching is completed, we then lay an additional 3″ top coat HMA over the entire length of the road being repaired. This method ensures a total patch depth of 24” from the top of the new roadway to the bottom of a deep patch area.
This is a much different process than has been used in the past, no more throwing cold mix in a push out area off the back of a pickup truck bed with a shovel and rake. Here in Road District 1, In Southwest Logan County, we are committed to employing the right people using the correct process operating effective technology in order to provide the highest quality design, construction, and maintenance of our county road and bridges within the budget we have available.
